Cams are cool!
The reciprocating motion needed for cross-winding the rope onto the drums is created by cam follower bearings running on a barrel cam. The initial design for the cam was created by Bill Daniels and the design was then sent to a mechanical engineer motion specialist in Britain for refinement. Finally the Design was made into reality at a specialty machine shop (Allcams in New Jersey). Machined out of 4150 low alloy steel and nitrile hardened. The axle of the cam was machined separately and cryofit. The cam will be driven by a 5hp air cooled electric gear motor.
